App releases surge 60% in Q1 as AI coding tools may fuel new development wave

App releases surge 60% in Q1 as AI coding tools may fuel new development wave Image: Primary
New app releases soared in the first quarter of 2026, with total launches across Apple's App Store and Google Play increasing 60% year-over-year, according to data from market intelligence provider Appfigures. iOS App Store releases alone jumped 80% compared to the same period last year. The growth accelerated in April, with app releases up 104% across both platforms and 89% on iOS versus April 2025. The findings counter predictions that AI chatbots and agents would diminish the relevance of traditional mobile apps. Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg "Joz" Joswiak recently remarked that "rumors of the App Store's death in the AI age may have been greatly exaggerated." Instead, AI may be driving a renaissance in app development by lowering technical barriers. Tools like Claude Code and Replit could enable creators with ideas but limited coding experience to build mobile software more easily, suggesting AI is amplifying rather than replacing app ecosystems. Mobile games continue to represent the largest category of new releases, followed by utilities, lifestyle applications, productivity tools, and health and fitness apps in the top five. The surge in submissions presents challenges for platform moderation. This week, Apple removed the rewards app Freecash for rules violations after it spent months in the Top Charts. The company also failed to detect a malicious cryptocurrency app that cloned Ledger Live and stole $9.5 million from users. Apple reported in 2024 that it rejected over 320,000 app submissions for spam, copying, or misleading content and prevented more than 37,000 potentially fraudulent apps from reaching users. Critics argue the company needs stronger proactive monitoring as volume increases. If AI-assisted development tools are indeed behind the app boom, the need for robust app review and fraud detection will grow alongside the expanding marketplace.
