Waymo says it will begin manually driving vehicles in Toronto in the coming days as it prepares an autonomous ride-hailing service targeting its first riders in 2028. Initial work includes high-definition street mapping and testing with trained specialists behind the wheel. The company is partnering with Toronto-headquartered Element Fleet Management to provide end-to-end fleet management services. Waymo says it and its partners will invest in local facilities and hundreds of roles over time, including fleet maintenance, validation driving and customer service. The initial driving and testing phase will assess the system's adaptation to Toronto conditions.
