Nvidia reports 104-qubit simulation under realistic hardware noise

JUPITER Supercomputer Image: Primary
Nvidia says it simulated a 104-qubit fault-tolerant quantum processor on 8,192 GPUs at Jülich Supercomputing Centre, validating an approach that requires 90% fewer physical qubits than previous methods. The simulation modeled realistic hardware noise to test how errors affect computation. The approach, called magic-state cultivation, produces arrangements of qubits consumed during fault-tolerant computation. Simulating that process lets researchers evaluate designs before building quantum hardware. Nvidia used its cuQuantum software and CUDA-Q platform on JUPITER's GH200 GPUs. Earlier Jülich research simulated 50 qubits under ideal, noiseless conditions; this result concerns simulated processor behavior rather than operation of a physical quantum computer.
