Google announces 1 GW data center demand response milestone with utilities

Google announces 1 GW data center demand response milestone with utilities Image: Primary
Google announced it reached a new milestone by integrating a total of 1 gigawatt of demand response capacity into its long-term energy contracts with multiple utilities across the United States. Demand response enables Google data centers to limit or shift a portion of machine learning workloads. This reduces overall power demand and helps utility companies balance supply and demand on the grid. The company said the agreements create a solution to make electricity systems more affordable and reliable. Google has signed contracts with Indiana Michigan Power, Tennessee Valley Authority, Entergy Arkansas, Minnesota Power and DTE Energy. Demand response can be deployed quickly to bridge short-term load growth and longer timelines for new clean generation and storage. The company collaborates with states, regulators and utility partners to modernize power system planning. It participates in the EPRI DCFlex initiative as a founding member. This work develops frameworks to value demand response as a capacity resource for the grid.
