AMD EXPO 1.2 Arrives on AM5 Motherboards With Support for Faster Memory

DDR5 memory modules Image: Primary
AMD has released EXPO 1.2, an updated memory overclocking technology for AM5 motherboards that adds support for faster memory kits, new timing controls, and additional memory vendors. Third-party developer 1usmus and hardware leaker chi11eddog detailed the improvements. One standout addition is Ultra Low Latency mode, which chi11eddog claims can reduce memory latency by five to seven nanoseconds on a typical DDR5-6000 kit. The update also introduces new timing fields including tREFI, tRRDS, and tWR, along with VDDP voltage options for enthusiasts. EXPO 1.2 adds support for module geometry, which refers to the arrangement of memory chips on a module. The feature may relate to HUDIMMs, a recent innovation that suppresses one 32-bit sub-channel to address memory shortages cost-effectively. The update introduces support for MRDIMMs designed for server and data center platforms, though these will not be available on consumer AM5 boards. Support for CUDIMMs and CSODIMMs remains partial. EXPO 1.2 retains bypass mode for CUDIMMs, treating them as standard modules without fully leveraging the client clock driver. According to 1usmus, current AGESA 1.3.0.1 firmware does not yet fully support CUDIMMs, and AMD is likely preparing for full support with upcoming Ryzen 10000 processors based on Zen 6 cores. AMD also expanded compatibility by adding support for three Chinese memory manufacturers: RAMXEED Limited Conexant, Rui Xuan, and Fujitsu Synaptics. Asus has begun deploying beta firmware with early EXPO 1.2 support across its X870E and X870 motherboards. Analysts expect the most substantial benefits of EXPO 1.2 will be unlocked with Zen 6 processors, which are anticipated between late 2026 and early 2027.
