IBM reports faster runtime model monitoring and steering with vLLM plugin

IBM reports faster runtime model monitoring and steering with vLLM plugin Image: Primary
IBM researchers reported that their new vLLM-Hook MIA plugin lets developers inspect and change AI models' internal states during generation while preserving the inference engine's fast execution mode. In experiments, steering added 2% inference delay in some tests with Llama 8B and Qwen 1.5B models and 6% with Llama 70B. The plugin inserts GPU operations before repetitive execution steps are recorded for replay, allowing monitoring and intervention without switching to slower execution. IBM reported speeds up to 20 times faster than the predecessor plugin. The findings concern runtime access and performance; the reported overhead varies by model and test.
